Silver Lake and Ivanhoe
Reservoir Master Plan
Workshop #1 Saturday, March 27, 1999
Water Quality - Workshop Comments
Filtration Facility
- Against a filtration plant on site
- Filtration plant should be underground or on a nearby site in
an industrial area
- Facility should be built under a parking lot
- Develop an underground filtration system with landscape
treatment above
- Industrial aspect of the facility is attractive
Technical Questions & Concerns
- Filtration plant is too noisy
- Concerned about ground seepage pollution
- Questioned that this facility should be a raw type water
facility with off-site filtering in order to make it more accessible
Water Quality
- Belief that the water is safe to drink
- Against the water being used as drinking water
- Water quality issues should be left up to the experts
- Concern that cars and buses are bad for the water
to top
Technical Questions & Concerns
- Concerned about whether the Dog Park affects the water quality
- Asked if the groundwater has any contamination
- Concerned about the pesticide spraying on the streets and
suggested using
- midge fly instead of pesticide spraying
- Questioned if there are alternatives to chlorine
- Questioned whether chlorinating will be replaced with another
process in the near future
- Questioned why McArthur Park has paddle boats
- Questioned about illness/deaths from the water in the last 50
years
DWP Operations
- DWP trucks do not affect traffic
- Chlorine trucks and commercial trucks go out from Armstrong
- DWP does a good job of working with the trucks
- Buildings on site are okay but are not kept up
- DWP should not direct traffic
- DWP conducts a safe operation
- Concerned that the Rowena tank is above ground and higher than
the street
Technical Questions & Concerns
- Questioned about what are the green tanks - pollock wells
- Questioned the loud early morning sound from the lake
to top
Birds & Flies
- Diversion area for birds should be developed with reeds that
may keep them off the reservoir
- Aeration facility fountains like at Echo Park could help keep
the birds away
- Flies are a problem seasonally
Lake Aesthetics
- West side of the lake has cracks perhaps add a coating
- Edge of the water should be accessible
- Safety and access to the lake is a priority
- Against covering up the lake
- A non-aesthetically pleasing lake is not acceptable
- Should not alter the look of the lake
- Do not want a 'Walden Pond'
- Pedestrian path should be right next to the lake
- Silver Lake should be relined to make it compatible with
Ivanhoe
to top
Embankments
- Embankments are unattractive and should be made to look more
natural
- Need to beautify the embankment
- Slopes of Silver Lake should be relined like the nice buff
color of Ivanhoe
- Against beige color and prefers black color
- Change the color to a less conspicuous color like gray
- Orange slopes do not look natural - Do not use orange paint
Regulations
- Questioned whether EPA will give enough time to respond
- The community needs to understand the operation requirements
and maintenance issues
Community
- Suggested education classes on water quality and the reservoir
